I never thought I would see this in Kindergarten
A TikTok topic came up about the "Grimmace Milkshake Challenge", in October, where several students knew about it and joined in the conversation, (and those that did not were listening intently). One of the students spoke loudly about how "if you drink the purple drink you will die! It's coming! It's going to come to us!" this child was visually scared believing this to be true, looking to me for any reassurance, along with a few more students, and those children that did not know about this were incredibly scared, even some in tears. All of this came up at snack time. 1/3 of my class watches TikTok at 5 years old.
Working 10 years in Elementary Education I have seen a significant change in children. I worry with the change I have seen in the students in the past 10 years, I worry for my own children, I worry that they will be exposed to things that cannot be unseen during their youth, I worry that their childhood will be taken away too early. I worry that I won't be able to monitor their screens, or keep up.

Cellphones Have Become Common in Elementary School
My child is in Grade 4 at a St. Albert school. Most of the kids have cellphones in their class. They do not have a cellphone, and feel left out. My child has mentioned how some of the kids are on TikTok at Recess. I don't want this for them.

Mental Health Crisis in Edmonton and Surrounding Areas
The number of youth that are being admitted on a daily basis to the Emergency Room for mental health support and suicide attempts is alarming. I hear from my colleges, who work in these ERs, that children are coming in more frequently and younger and younger.

The Northern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit
I went to a presentation at my child's school put on by the ICE (Internet Child Exploitation) unit of the RCMP and the Edmonton Police. I was shocked to learn that St. Albert, Morinville and Sturgeon County have some of the highest rates of child luring. They have so many intake reports that they have to triage and choose "the worst" ones to investigate.
Sgt. Kerry Shima, from the RCMP, shared that once the details come out in a case of child sextoration, the incidents happened most often when they were alone in their room or in the bathroom with their device.
